Shitennoji has undergone repeated reconstructions the most recent in 1963. but its architectural layout has remained unchanged. The area was once a center of Buddhist power large imperial court, and the old neighborhood surrounding Shitennoji is still full of temples today. In addition, the area is famous for its numerous small shops selling exceptionally delicious tsukemono.
A large scale flea market is held here on the 21st of each month, and the famous Doya Doya festival is held here every year.
Shitennoji temple was, in a way, the official stating point for Buddhism in Japan, and it is the central point for the religion in Osaka. This temple has also has been know by the names Arahakaji, Nanbaji, and Mitsuji. The oldest government -administered Buddhist Shotoku in 593.
